Hello. Welcome to theotherstraw, so happy you’re here!
We’re Jamie-Lee and Lennart, the social impact couple behind theotherstraw.
With 8 million tons of plastic being dumped into our oceans every year, our marine life is swallowing more plastic than ever before. theotherstraw was born to do something about our plastic crisis.
Our journey started in 2018. We were fed up with the number of plastic straws polluting our local beaches and natural environments. We’re fortunate to live by the beautiful beaches on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia. Living down here, we’ve seen firsthand the damaging impacts single-use plastics on our natural environments.
Plastic straws are one of the most picked up items during beach cleanups. They take hundreds, sometimes thousands of years to actually break down and every single plastic straw you've ever used still exists today.
theotherstraw serves as a symbol to everything people can do in their everyday life to live a less wasteful lifestyle.
Since launching late 2018, we’ve sold over 90,000 reusable bamboo straws and prevented over 9 million plastic straws from entering our landfills, natural environments and oceans.
To further our impact, we expanded our bamboo range in 2019. We've introduced other sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics.
Together, we’re better. Join us and help turn the tide on plastic.
We would love to hear from you.

○Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world, in the right conditions bamboo can grow up to 1 meter in a single day.
○Bamboo absorbs greenhouse gases.
○Bamboo can help stop global warming. It absorbs carbon dioxide and releases up to 35% more oxygen than trees.
○Nearly zero waste! After our bamboo is harvested, nearly every part of the bamboo plant is used to create some sort of sustainable production. From enriching mulch to furniture to straws, bamboo is one of the most utilised plants in the world.
○Bamboo is grown organically. Unlike other crops, bamboo requires no fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides or other chemicals to help it grow.
○Bamboo can help stop deforestation. Nearly 1 million acres of forest are destroyed each week around the world to deforestation. Bamboo is a great substitute for timber and has the potential to protect millions of trees around the world.
For us, sustainability is not a buzzword or an afterthought. We live and breathe it. From growing our bamboo to offsetting our transport emissions, we do everything we can to keep our carbon footprint at a minimum. Our straws are grown sustainably with organic bamboo, free from any pesticides or nasties.
zero emissions, zero waste
We're partnered with Sendle to post all our online orders and wholesale bamboo straws out carbon-neutral. We have a zero waste shipping policy. All our packaging materials contain 100% recycled and/or post-consumer materials. All our packaging can be composted, and/or recycled.
Our straws are ethically-sourced in Northern Vietnam. We provide sustainable job opportunities for local minority groups to improve their livelihoods.
We're committed to plastic-free oceans and that is why we are donating part of our profits to initiatives that support this vision.
We feel proud to call our work colleagues our friends. We work closely with our farmers and producers in Vietnam.
It's essential for us to do everything we can to make a positive difference for our planet and the people making our straws. Ethical and sustainable production are embedded in our core values. We have a close relationship with our makers and we believe that producing straws should never cost our environment or people.
theotherstraw has two farms in Vietnam. Our first farm is around 60km outside of Hanoi and our second farm is in the beautiful Quảng Bình Province. Both our farms are run by local families who provide sustainable job opportunities for both women and men in their local villages.
Vietnam has a tropical climate with high temperatures and humidity, ideal for growing bamboo. Vietnamese have been using bamboo for a long time. They use it for just about everything, from building houses to household equipment such as tables, chairs and lamps.
We are 1% For The Planet members as we want to further boost our support and love for our natural environments and oceans - something so important to us. As part of our pledge, we donate at least 1% of our annual revenue to grassroots environmental groups. These groups are out there working to preserve our natural wonders in the world and driving positive change.
We're here to humanise the makers and creators of our straws. Supporting our producers and connecting them with you.
