Hello. Welcome to theotherstraw, so happy you’re here!
We’re Jamie-Lee and Lennart, the social impact couple behind theotherstraw.
theotherstraw is a response to one of the world's biggest challenges; plastic pollution. We are stunned with the number of plastic waste on our beaches, throughout nature, in city centres, in oceans and basically everywhere else. Plastic straws are among the top 10 plastic items found in beach clean ups every year and we have seen first-hand the negative impacts the straws were having on marine life and humans all over the world. We had to do something about it.
We are obsessed with ending single-use plastic items. It makes absolutely no sense to get rid of an item within a couple seconds, especially when that item takes minutes to make and then hundreds of years to break down into tiny fractions whilst polluting land, waterways and ultimately ending up in the ocean, continuing its path of pollution. We want to inspire humanity to make more sustainable and ethical decisions. Especially when it is not difficult (at all!) to live more sustainably. We will achieve this one sip at a time.
theotherstraw is a sustainable, enterprise replacing single-use plastics straws with reusable, eco-friendly, organic, 100% natural, biodegradable, sustainable bamboo straws.
Bamboo is one of the most sustainable growing plants in the world. Here are a few reasons why theotherstraw is made from bamboo:
○Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world, in the right conditions bamboo can grow up to 1 meter in a single day.
○Bamboo absorbs greenhouse gases.
○Bamboo can help stop global warming. It absorbs carbon dioxide and releases up to 35% more oxygen than trees.
○Nearly zero waste! After our bamboo is harvested, nearly every part of the bamboo plant is used to create some sort of sustainable production. From enriching mulch to furniture to straws, bamboo is one of the most utilised plants in the world.
○Bamboo is grown organically. Unlike other crops, bamboo requires no fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides or other chemicals to help it grow.
○Bamboo can help stop deforestation. Nearly 1 million acres of forest are destroyed each week around the world to deforestation. Bamboo is a great substitute for timber and has the potential to protect millions of trees around the world.
In everything we do, here at theotherstraw, we try to reflect our core values; ethical, empowerment and giving. Sustainability is at the heart of our business. From harvesting bamboo, to shipping and from packing our products to handing out business cards, we try to keep our carbon footprint small throughout various processes.
For all of our packaging we use 100% recycled wrapping paper or other 100% post consumer recycled products.
All our wholesale orders within Australia are posted plastic-free and fully carbon-neutral with our shipping partner Sendle.
All our marketing material, including business cards, product tags, signage, posters, flyers and more, are all printed on ethically sourced paper.
We ensure that our producers receive a prosperous and fair wage with healthy working conditions. Sustainability is at the heart of our enterprise. We keep our carbon footprint small through resource recycling and energy conservation. We strive to ensure that we have minimal negative impact on local communities and the global environment.
A portion of our profits goes towards supporting projects that protect the world's oceans and marine life. Every year, 8 million metric tons of plastic ends up in our oceans and killing marine life. theotherstraw is committed to plastic free oceans and that is why we are donating part of our profits to initiatives that support this vision.
We provide economic opportunities and sustainable job creation to ethnic minority groups in Vietnam to improve the livelihoods and well-being for themselves, their families and their communities. We praise craftmanship through the entire production process of theotherstraw. From harvest to design, we rely on local expert knowledge, skills and creativity to deliver the perfect straw.
